Police arrested for extortion


Pietermaritzburg police officers are expected to make their first appearance in court.

Three police officers are set to appear in the Pietermaritzburg’s Magistrates court on Wednesday charges of assault, corruption and extortion. The offices allegedly assaulted a woman, accusing her of selling fake drivers licenses. Two members reported on duty handed themselves to the investigating officer. The third member was arrested on Monday.

Police spokesperson Mthokizisi Ngobese said the matter is currently being investigated the members were suspended immediately after arrest.

Cluster commander Major General Ngobeni has expressed his disappointment about the serious allegations leveled against the members. He also commended the members of the public for reporting alleged unacceptable behavior of the members.
