Stolen bicycle parts recovered in hijacked truck

Stolen goods and drugs recovered by local SAPS members.

Vigilant members of the New Hanover South African Police Services (SAPS), over the weekend, made a substantial recovery of stolen bicycle parts, that were stolen when a truck was hijacked last month.

Constable Prince Mzolo and Constable Nomty Xulu were on patrol in the New Hanover plantation, when they came across a container, on a trailer of a truck that had been abandoned on the side of the gravel road.

The members immediately circulated the details of the trailer and with the assistance of the Organised Crime Unit, established that the truck was hijacked on the Howick off ramp on September 22, 2015.

It was then established that the truck and trailer, after it was hijacked, had been partially emptied at a warehouse in Portland Road, Mkondeni. A few days later, the truck was then found abandoned in Amanzimtoti with the driver bound and gagged in it.

Police over the weekend found the rest of the consignment of bicycle parts that had not been off-loaded at the Mkondeni warehouse. The value of the recovered property has not been ascertained as yet and police are communicating with the owner of the trailer to continue investigations.

Meanwhile, Mooi River police also made several arrests over the weekend when two suspects, wanted for armed robbery and assault committed in March in Ntabakulu, Eastern Cape, were apprehended.

The suspects fled the province and information was received that the suspects were working and living in the Nottingham Road policing precinct. Warrant Officer Marius Van Der Schyff and Detective Warrant Officer Jabulani Mchunu, had warrants of arrests that they received from the police in Eastern Cape and proceeded to track the suspects down. Two African males, aged 19 and 22 years respectively were arrested and detained.

This weekend Mountain Rise members from the crime prevention and detective services joined forces and effected a total of 23 arrests ranging from housebreaking and theft, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, disturbance, drunk driving, theft, reckless and negligent driving, drug related offences and dealing in liquor without valid licence.

A bag containing implements used to break into cars was also recovered lying at the side of the road in Northdale. In addition to the arrests, police confiscated a small quantity of dagga and heroin with a street value of R15 000.

Brigadier Francis Bantham, acting cluster commander, commended the police members for their swift action and the recovery of the stolen goods and vehicle.

“Police are adopting a zero tolerance approach where criminals will have no place to hide. The SAPS is serious in their fight against crime and this should serve as a deterrent to criminals,” said Bantham.

Brigadier Bantham once again appealed to the community to join hands in the united fight against crime.
