Excellent results applauded

Raisethorpe Secondary pupils, Devlin Govender and Muhammad Ismail Patel are among seven of the school’s top achievers who were invited to the official release of the 2015 matric results at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban yesterday (Wednesday) after achieving eight and seven distinctions respectively.

Nicolin Govender, Lexia Michelle Naidoo, Ulika Ballilall and Sonal Sewrathan were all overwhelmed when they returned to school yesterday to pick up their National Senior Certificates that reflected seven distinctions. Tejal Bhagwandeen, also of Raisethorpe Secondary, received eight distinctions and made her way to Cape Town to enjoy a well-deserved holiday after learning of her excellent results.

Govender, who will be studying at the Air Traffic Navigation Services academy (ATNS) in Johannesburg, said he was elated when he heard of his results. “I thoroughly enjoyed my matric year and I am quite sad to be leaving all my friends as none of them are moving to Johannesburg,” said Govender who indicated that he will eventually branch of into the piloting field. Naidoo said she will be studying mechanical engineering at the University of KwaZulu- Natal (UKZN) and hopes to be an inventor in the future.

Ballilall expressed her shock and disbelief when she received her results saying that all of her family was crying and overwhelmed and she didn’t believe her results. “During the trial exams I got a B for physical science and here I am with an A from the finals. I am glad that it’s over and we have to now move on and grow,” she said. The 17 year old plans on studying accounting also at UKZN. Sewrathan said she was overwhelmed with her results. “I did not expect seven distinctions as I found the mathematics to be very difficult. I will be studying chemical engineering at the University of Witwatersrand,” she said. She advised future matriculants to work hard consistently in order to achieve the best results.

An ecstatic principal of Raisethorpe Secondary, Indran Pillay said the results were an end result of hard work displayed by the learners, educators and parents. He said that the collective effort was part of the ethos of the school. “I am ecstatic about the results. Our learners have done Raisethorpe Secondary School proud and they are true ambassadors of the school,” said Pillay. The principal cited extra hours of studying as one of the contributing factors for good results. “We are especially proud of those who got a full house of distinctions and the learners who featured in the top five in the district. I want to take this opportunity to wish all the matriculants of 2015 all of the best in future studies,” said Pillay.

He confirmed that the results are very consistent and have not dipped since previous years. “The schools bachelor pass rate is consistently around 75% which is what we aim for. The pass rate sits at 98% which is above pr. The quality of passes is very consistent and I’m thrilled to get two of the top pupils in the district,” added Pillay. All the pupils agreed that the trial examinations were easier when compared to the final examinations.

Being the only pupil to get an A in Mathematics and Information Technology at Heather Secondary School was overwhelming for Revalin Govender, who scored three distinctions including Life Orientation.

“I am very excited with my results and I’d like to thank my family for making sure I work hard throughout the year,” said Govender, who is planning to study Actuarial Science or Computer Science at the University of Pretoria.

A proud Johnny Govender said the family sacrificed everything they had to make sure that their son did not lose focus of his studies throughout 2015. “His mother and I provided for his tuition and assisted him with past year papers,” said Govender’s father, who admitted that he will miss his son once he leaves the city to study in Pretoria.

Heather Secondary School principal D K John said the learners who achieved top results had made everyone proud and confidently predicted that this year’s results will be better.
